How it works

SWR = (1 + |Γ|) / (1 − |Γ|) where Γ is the reflection coefficient. From forward/reflected power: |Γ| = √(Pr / Pf). Return loss (dB) = −20 log₁₀|Γ|. Mismatch loss (dB) = −10 log₁₀(1 − |Γ|²). SWR below 1.5 is excellent, 1.5–2.0 is acceptable, above 3 usually needs attention.

How to use

  1. Choose an input mode: forward/reflected power, or load and line impedance.
  2. Enter the values and read the computed SWR, reflection coefficient, return loss, and mismatch loss.
  3. Watch the color indicator: green (≤1.5), yellow (1.5–2), orange (2–3), red (>3).

Frequently asked questions

Is a 1.0 SWR always the goal?

It is the theoretical ideal, but anything under ~1.5:1 is essentially perfect for most amateur transmitters.

Does high SWR damage my radio?

Modern solid-state finals fold back power above ~2:1. Sustained high SWR at full power can stress finals; use a tuner or fix the antenna.
