Choosing the Right Coax: What the Data Sheet Is Actually Telling You

RG-58, RG-8X, LMR-400, hardline. The names are a mess, the marketing is worse. Here is the honest guide to picking a feedline that matches the job.

Why the cable matters more than the radio

Operators love to argue about receivers, filters, and amplifier headroom. Meanwhile the single most consequential decision most stations make is invisible on the outside: which cable carries the signal from the radio to the antenna. A great radio into bad coax is a bad station. A modest radio into good coax, hung from a decent antenna, is a station that quietly outperforms much more expensive rigs on the same bands.

Coax matters because every meter of it dissipates a fraction of your signal as heat, and that fraction rises with frequency. On 80 meters, almost any cable is fine. On 70 centimeters, a cheap cable can eat half your power before it reaches the antenna, and it will do the same in reverse on receive, adding noise that the antenna never captured in the first place.

Reading a coax data sheet without lying to yourself

The three numbers that actually matter are characteristic impedance, attenuation per hundred feet at your operating frequency, and power handling at that same frequency. Impedance is almost always 50 ohms in amateur work. Attenuation is where honest specification separates good cable from bad. Power handling matters only for the highest-power stations; almost no amateur exceeds the ratings of even modest cable at HF.

Attenuation is quoted at specific frequencies. A cable that is 1 dB per hundred feet at 30 MHz might be 6 dB per hundred feet at 450 MHz. A 3 dB loss means half your power is gone. Every additional 3 dB halves what remains. This is why the same coax that is transparent on 40 meters is a disaster on a UHF repeater link.

The main types, in one honest ranking

RG-58 is the smallest common coax, cheap, flexible, and lossy. Fine for jumpers under six feet on any band. Fine for full runs on HF up to about 20 meters. Not appropriate above that.

RG-8X, sometimes called mini-8, is a middle-ground cable, more flexible than full RG-8 and much lower loss than RG-58. A reasonable default for HF station runs under fifty feet.

RG-213 and true RG-8 are the traditional heavy HF cables. Low loss on all HF bands, acceptable on VHF for short runs, physically stiff and heavy but nearly indestructible.

LMR-400 and its equivalents are modern replacements for RG-8 with a solid center conductor and a foil-plus-braid shield. Meaningfully lower loss than RG-213 at VHF and UHF, and the reasonable default for any run longer than thirty feet at those bands.

Hardline, meaning cable with a solid copper outer conductor, is the gold standard for long runs and high frequencies. It is expensive, unforgiving to install, and worth every penny for a serious UHF or microwave station.

The trap of the free cable

The most common mistake in home stations is a hundred-foot run of unknown coax salvaged from a satellite install or a CB installation. It is free, it looks like coax, and its loss numbers are wildly worse than the equivalent radio-grade cable. If you do not know the exact type, sweep it with an analyzer on the band you plan to use. If the loss is more than about 2 dB across your target run, use it as bench cable and buy something appropriate for the antenna.

Connectors and the failure that will get you

Cable failures at home are almost always at the connector, not in the cable itself. Water infiltration into a PL-259 is the single most common failure mode of any outdoor amateur installation, and it presents as slowly rising SWR over months as the shield corrodes. The fix is boring and cheap: seal every outdoor connector with self-vulcanizing rubber tape and a layer of electrical tape over that. Do this once, on installation, and you will not touch the joint for a decade.

N connectors are better for weatherproofing than PL-259 and are standard on modern LMR-400 installations. For a mixed station, adapters are fine as long as they are quality parts and are also sealed against water.

The two-line rule of thumb for buying

For any HF-only run under fifty feet, RG-8X is fine and inexpensive. For anything longer, or anything that includes VHF or UHF, LMR-400 or its equivalents is the correct default. Every other decision, from hardline for a mountaintop repeater to RG-58 for a short handheld pigtail, follows from that base.
