Passing Your Amateur Radio License Exam: A Six-Week Plan
The exam is a much smaller obstacle than the folklore suggests. Here is a study plan, the topics that unlock everything else, and what exam day looks like.

The exam is easier than the folklore suggests
Almost everyone who postpones getting licensed does so because of an imagined exam rather than the real one. The imagined version involves calculus, morse code, and a proctor who wants you to fail. The real version is thirty-five multiple-choice questions drawn from a published pool, no code test anywhere in the world since 2007, a passing bar of seventy-four percent, and a volunteer examiner team whose members are visibly pleased when you pass. Teenagers pass it. People who have never soldered anything pass it. If you can read a diagram and do arithmetic on a phone, you can pass it in six weeks of light study.
This article assumes the United States three-tier structure of Technician, General, and Amateur Extra, because that is the largest single pool of new operators. If you are elsewhere, the syllabus names differ but the structure under the ITU framework is close enough that the study plan transfers directly. Check your national society's website for the current syllabus and exam logistics.
What is actually on the test
The Technician pool covers five broad areas. Rules and regulations, which is memorization and the single largest block. Operating procedures, which is etiquette and practice. Radio and electronics theory, which is the part people fear and the smallest part in practice. Antennas and feedlines, which is the most immediately useful material you will learn. And safety, which includes RF exposure and basic electrical practice.
Notice what is not on it. There is no requirement to design a circuit, derive a formula, or perform any calculation more complicated than multiplying and dividing. The handful of numerical questions involve Ohm's law, power, frequency and wavelength conversion, and simple decibel ratios. Every one of those is a single-step calculation.
A six-week schedule that works for busy adults
Week one and two: read a structured beginner book or work through a free online course covering the whole syllabus once, without stopping to master anything. The goal is to see every topic, not to learn it. Two evenings a week is enough.
Week three and four: focus on the four foundation ideas in the next section, and start using a question-pool trainer for twenty minutes at a time. Do not memorize answers yet. When you get a question wrong, read the explanation and move on. Your practice scores will climb from the fifties into the seventies during this phase, which feels like magic and is really just repeated exposure.
Week five: keep drilling and start tracking which subelements you consistently miss. There will be two or three. Go back to the book for those specific sections and read them properly. This is the week that turns a marginal pass into a comfortable one.
Week six: take full-length practice exams under realistic conditions until you score above eighty-five percent three times in a row. Then register for a session and stop studying. Cramming the night before produces worse results than sleep.
The four ideas that unlock the rest
First, Ohm's law and the power relationship. Voltage equals current times resistance, and power equals voltage times current. Nearly every numeric question on the exam is one of these two equations rearranged.
Second, the relationship between frequency and wavelength. Wavelength in meters is three hundred divided by frequency in megahertz. From that single line you can answer band-identification questions, antenna-length questions, and several rules questions about privileges. Third, decibels as ratios. Three decibels is double the power, ten decibels is ten times the power, and negative numbers mean less. That is genuinely all the decibel arithmetic the exam requires.
Fourth, the band plan. Knowing which bands your class may use, and roughly which segments are for which modes, converts an entire block of rules questions from memorization into common sense. Spend an hour with the HAMSTATION band plan reference and it will stick better than any flashcard deck.
Question pools, trainers, and the memorization trap
The full question pool is public, which tempts people to memorize it outright. Resist that, not for moral reasons but for practical ones. Memorized answers evaporate within days, they do not survive the slightly reworded distractors on the real form, and they leave you licensed but unable to reason about your own station. Use the trainer as a diagnostic tool that tells you which sections to study, not as the study material itself.
One genuinely useful memorization exercise is the small set of numbers that appear repeatedly: the band edges for your class, the power limits, and the RF exposure evaluation thresholds. Write those on a single index card and review it while you drill. They are the only pure facts worth rote learning.
Exam day logistics
Sessions run at clubs, hamfests, libraries, and increasingly over video call with remote proctoring. You will need a government photo identification, an FCC Registration Number obtained in advance, a modest exam fee, and a simple calculator with the memory cleared. Programmable devices and phones stay in your bag.
The exam is not timed aggressively; most people finish in twenty minutes. If you pass, the team will offer you the next exam element on the spot for no additional fee, which is why a surprising number of people walk in for Technician and walk out with General. If you have studied the General material at all, take the shot. The worst outcome is that nothing happens.
The week after you pass
Your call sign will appear in the public database within a few business days, and you may not transmit until it does. Use that waiting period well. Program a handheld with the local repeaters, listen to the evening nets, and learn the rhythm of how people identify and hand off. Then key up, say your new call sign, and let somebody welcome you, because they will.
Then set a date, roughly a year out, to sit for the next class. The General exam opens the HF bands, which is where the hobby's long-distance work happens, and the material is only a modest step up from what you have already learned. Almost nobody regrets upgrading early, and almost everybody who waits wishes they had not.
